Panda3dp.com Commentary: Manufacturing large-scale metal components such as aerospace engines requires ultra-large-format metal 3D printers. These machines have demanding requirements for quality stability and reproducible consistency—challenges that call for truly robust R\&D capabilities from equipment manufacturers.

Today, industry pioneers such as Feikang have taken the lead in deploying dedicated production lines with dozens of large-format systems, accelerating the sector toward batch production and scaled industrial application.

Building on more than a decade of additive manufacturing expertise, Farsoon launched its globally leading large-format metal additive manufacturing system in 2023—the FS1521M series (including the standard FS1521M and the tall-cylinder FS1521M-U). Featuring 16/32-laser coordinated technology, the system enables precision production of ultra-large parts with a maximum build volume of 1510×1510×1650mm.

To date, Farsoon has sold nearly 150 units of its ultra-meter-class large-format equipment worldwide, with customers spanning key regions in Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific. The FS1521M series alone has recorded nearly 20 global sales, placing it among industry leaders. Multiple models are now deeply integrated into the full process of critical component R\&D and mass production, continuously helping industrial users achieve technological leaps and deliver greater value.

Since beginning their collaboration in 2019, Feikang has steadily expanded its fleet of Farsoon metal additive manufacturing systems. It now operates nearly 40 Farsoon metal AM machines, strengthening its industrial-scale manufacturing service capacity with the goal of becoming an internationally leading provider of comprehensive metal 3D printing solutions.

In-House Innovations Address Industrial Demands

To meet industrial users’ needs, the FS1521M series has tackled numerous technical challenges, including large-volume powder cleaning, batch-production cost control, and ultra-wide-span fume extraction, achieving new breakthroughs in large-format multi-laser metal additive manufacturing.

1. Airflow Innovation: An innovative dual-layer airflow design effectively addresses ultra-wide-span fume removal, delivering highly uniform and stable airflow.

2. Long-Duration Printing: Standard dual long-life circulation filtration systems, with four overflow powder containers for both building and cleaning, plus up to four powder recovery units. Single-unit recovery efficiency reaches 90L/h, with a maximum system recovery of 360L/hsolving the challenge of large-scale powder recycling.

3. High-Precision Multi-Laser Overlap: An optimized overlap strategy plus an intelligent multi-laser calibration system keeps calibration accuracy within ±0.05mm, ensuring part quality.

4. MES System: Includes six modules enabling a single operator to manage 12 machines simultaneously, reducing equipment management labor costs by 70% and significantly boosting industrial efficiency.

5. Proprietary Software: Fully in-house developed software, algorithms, and control systems ensure information security and technical autonomy. An intelligent powder spreading inspection and monitoring system provides real-time process monitoring and records, ensuring full traceability for printed parts.

Dual-Engine Approach: Materials and Process Innovation

Farsoon is focused on advancing high-performance materials and process development for the aerospace sector, meeting demands for components with high strength, heat resistance, and lightweight characteristics in extreme environments. The company has developed over 40 high-performance metal additive manufacturing material processes, delivering dual improvements in forming precision and stability to ensure comprehensive support from material properties to part performance in complex aerospace manufacturing.

At the same time, Farsoon has introduced innovative solutions to address industry pain points, including low-support-angle forming technology, the “Olympic” process optimization project, and large-format copper alloy solutions.

For example, the low-support-angle process achieves printing with minimal supports at angles as shallow as 10°, and 15° for inverted-cone structures—reducing material costs, improving print efficiency, and cutting post-processing time. The “Olympic” project combines multiple equipment and process upgrades to more than triple the efficiency of large-format metal 3D printing while maintaining high quality. In partnership with Capital Aerospace Machinery Company, Farsoon has also launched the FS621M-Cu, a professional-grade large-format copper alloy AM solution that overcomes the challenge of reliably printing large, highly reflective parts for extended durations.
